Japan Police Data Exposed: 22 Forces Hit in Arcadia Breach
The National Police Agency said the “personal information of officers and other employees at 22 prefectural police forces” may have been compromised after “a recent data breach at disaster information services firm Arcadia Inc.” Twenty-two of the country’s 47 prefectural forces are affected.
Four forces, in Kyoto, Fukuoka, Shimane and Yamaguchi, face deeper exposure, officials said, because they had also “registered local residents’ email addresses with the service for security purposes.”
The police disclosure was not the only data-security warning issued this week. Employee recruitment agency Recruit Co. flagged a “possible leak of personal information involving 3.7 million accounts for its Carsensor used car information service.”
The announcements follow a survey released Monday indicating that nearly 30.2% of large Japanese companies may have suffered data leaks at some point, whether through cyberattacks or human error.
